APPLICATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION FOR THE PROPOSED PROSPECTING OPERATIONS BY NDOWANA EXPLORATION TWO (PTY) LTD IN THE HAENERTSBURG AREA WITHIN THE LEPELLE-NKUMPI LOCAL MUNICIPALITY OF CAPRICORN DISTRICT.
I have been requested by Ndowana Exploration Two (Pty) Ltd., in terms of Regulation 10(2) of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations 2006, to inform you that the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism has decided not to grant authorisation for their above application.
The following is a direct copy of the concluding paragraph in the Reasons for the Decision:
“ 3.2 After consideration of the information and factors listed above, the Department made the following findings-
a) Despite the efforts by the Department to indicate the sensitivity of the area, the public strongly oppose to the proposed activity into taking place;
b) The land owners consent letter is not included in this application; and
c) The site alternatives were not assessed.
In view of the above and acknowledgement of the extremely sensitive, critically endangered and irreplaceable environmental biomes that exist in the area as well as the strong community opposition to the proposed activity, the Department does not support this development. The application is accordingly denied. ″
Should you wish to appeal against this decision, the process is as follows:
a) A notice of intention to appeal must be submitted to the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism , Mr. P. Moloto, within 10 days of receiving this letter...
De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited and Mvelaphanda Resources (Pty) Ltd. in a joint venture, Ndowana Exploration Two (Pty) Ltd., are prospecting for a diamond mine in the Wolkberg Mountains 4.5 km from the town of Haenertsburg
