In 2014 FroHG applied to the National Department of Environmental Affairs for funding to control alien invasive plants in the extensive grasslands along the northern slopes of the Wolkberg, between Iron Crown and Serala. The Department allocated an amount of R 4 898 000 for this purpose, an amount that will be spread over a period of 30 months.
Early in 2015, a team of forty workers from the Spitskop / Segwashe villages has been recruited and all have undergone training in the use of various equipment, occupational safety, herbicides and other skills required to undertake the work. Transport is provided by four vehicle owners in Segwashe and the project is managed by Ms. Jessica Letsoalo who has wide experience in ‘Working for Water’ projects.
The funds allocated by the Department of Environmental Affairs are being managed on behalf of FroHG by the Haenertsburg Development Foundation under the Chairmanship of Michael Gardner.
Michael Gardner had this comment to make, “This is a war that we cannot afford to lose but it will be a long series of skirmishes and battles before we can say that our grasslands are in a healthy and strong position to resist further invasions. We are very grateful to the Department of Environmental Affairs, especially the officials in Polokwane and Tzaneen, for the help and support they have given us.”
