Damage to grasslands

South African grasslands are beautiful places to visit, often because those that remain occur in mountainous areas with beautiful views but also because of the wonderful array of interesting plants to be seen. They are not just a pretty face either, but provide valuable services including carbon storage, grazing, water provision and moderation of water flow. The plants themselves are valuable horticulturally, pharmaceutically and aesthetically. So it is understandable that we like to spend time in these special areas and those around Haenertsburg are no exception.

The critically endangered grassland along the R71 next to the Magoebaskloof Hotel was damaged by Hillary Construction dumping 7 big truck loads of soil mixed with kikuyu on 26th June 2012 the following morning Hillary had heavy machinery in there to load the soil, however this was stopped and then Hillary staff  hand filled bags with soil and removed them with a bakkie. The site is no longer being disturbed.
