A new project for FROHG concerns two large erosion sites (dongas) on the Georges Valley side of the Grasslands.
See photo below. One of these is fairly well grassed and is less of a worry. The other is badly eroded, with steep sandy slopes. Haenertsburg residents have tried over the years to fix this, but the problem remains. Currently, FROHG members are busy terracing the slopes and laying cut grass on the slopes. Bricks and poles have been used to create barriers to slow down the water. By March 2008, considerable success was visible in that silt had built up around most of the barriers. This silt would otherwise have been washed into Georges Valley Road. Hessian has also now been placed on the worst slopes, and seeded with grass seeds. It is hoped these will germinate soon. Plants such as Buddleja have also been planted in strategic places.
Thanks to Rotary Haenertsburg for their financial support.
